SHIBA is a research project aiming to develop a unique and novel method of characterizing traumatic brain injury at a cellular level and molecular level.

Research methodology

Participant selection

Patients who have severe head injury at the Royal London Hospital who have surgery or intracranial pressure monitoring

Consent

Unconscious patients cannot consent to research.

Ethics allows to recruit patients if the next of kin or a senior doctor agrees

Procedures

A tiny sample of brain tissue is taken during surgery.

Risks

There are not thought to be additional risks other than those associated with surgery

Additional investigations

We take blood tests for 7 days

Follow up

We will follow up patients in clinic and link their injury severity to their clinical outcome.
