Severe Head Injury Brain Analysis
SHIBA is a research project aiming to develop a unique and novel method of characterizing traumatic brain injury at a cellular level and molecular level.
Patients who have severe head injury at the Royal London Hospital who have surgery or intracranial pressure monitoring
Unconscious patients cannot consent to research.
Ethics allows to recruit patients if the next of kin or a senior doctor agrees
A tiny sample of brain tissue is taken during surgery.
There are not thought to be additional risks other than those associated with surgery
We take blood tests for 7 days
We will follow up patients in clinic and link their injury severity to their clinical outcome.
